Thirty youth professionals from across Indiana are selected to the prestigious 2019 Executive Journey Fellowship
Jessica Hilary, Executive Director of the Student Hunger Drive of Northern Indiana and part time Community Outreach and Enrollment Specialist for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Elkhart County is among one of 30 executives from youth-serving organizations who have been selected to receive the 2019 Executive Journey Fellowship Program. Jessica, along with SHD Board President Becky Asleson, brought the Student Hunger Drive to Northern Indiana in 2012.
The Student Hunger Drive works with area schools to raise food for those in need through a six week friendly competition benefiting the Food Bank of Northern Indiana and other area food pantries. Students participating in this program develop a raised awareness of the need in their community and further develop their servant leadership because of this experience. Students are essentially running small non-profits within their schools with innovative ideas to raise as much food and money as possible during the drive. Since its inception, area students have raised over 600,000 pounds of food through food donated and monetary funds raised.
In response to a growing need for ongoing professional and personal renewal in the field of youth work, the Journey Fellowship was created in 2002 and funded by the Lilly Endowment Inc. The Executive Journey Fellowship provides Indiana’s youth workers greater opportunities to bring more meaning to their lives and make stronger commitments to the field of youth work.
"This Fellowship is about renewing individuals, which leads to renewing organizations and ultimately, to renewing the entire field of youth work,” says Tom Plake, Journey Leader.
Each of the thirty participants in the Journey Fellowship will attend a series of residential retreats designed to create new ways of thinking about and practicing youth work within existing systems and youth programs. Fellows are awarded personal renewal scholarships, and will be supported to make a difference within their local organizations and communities.
